I know im a newbie on here but have to ask. As this site is dedicated to ferrets and there owners is there any chance of a section for hunting ferrets. There are a fair few of us out here and would be nice to have a section just for that to share tips and photos and such like.
Just an idea ......if not i can go hide in my box ;D ;D ;D

most on here have ferrets as pets, and treat them as pets not as what they are intended for and is sort of frowned upon due to not having a clue of what actually happens and that its "killing innocent bunnys", i personally would also like to see a hunting section on this forum for hunting with ferrets..

I sort of see the point......but ;D My ferret is my pet and some people dont work there ferrets and have them solely as a pet. But for those that do work there ferrets it would be nice to cater for all parties .......we all still love our ferrets . As for people frowning upon it, and some not understanding how it is undertaken, its an ideal way to learn more about ferret hunting. I would personally offer anyone a morning ferreting with me if they ever fancied seeing a ferret working in the wild (genuine offer). Also if there is a section for hunting then the hunters can use it and the pet owners dont have to look in it ;D ;D ;D

Thats a nice looking bird. Never been ferreting with a Bird of prey i only get to use purse nets. Do you need a license for them? And how easy is it too train one to come back to you?

yes you need license for them, all birds of prey need a license in the south... each bird is different i flew a male harris which was my first bird took 2weeks to get him flying free and hunting and the goshawk took me 5weeks to get hunting and coming back, i have been hawking for the past 6years and have trained 2male harris male goshawk and female redtail... harris hawks are great fun to fly at rabbits as they are evenly matched goshawk is sometimes a bit over the top due to them being alot quicker than a harris.. check this out its not ferreting but gives you an idea, harris hawks are the only bird of prey that hunt in packs www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozW0fGF0jb0&feature=related this next clip is a goshawk they are more of a feather specialist www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L1nPwKZ6do&feature=related

Blimey that looks like a good days sport. I didnt realise that a Goshawk could get its speed up so fast in a short distance. Fairly hefty price for a bird though from what i can see on the net.
What would you have to go thru to get a license to keep one. Do you use ferrets to make the rabbits bolt then? I'd be afraid the Bird would go for the ferret rather than the rabbit. Must do some investigating on how to train a bird like that. Two weeks doesnt seem that long a time to train one though.

the best thing for you to do is to try find some1 close to u with birds and go with them, dont just jump in with 2 feet without help on hand... birds have to be weighed every day and fly at a certain weight.. for example my gos flies at 1lb 6 and 3/4 oz if he was 1lb 7 he wouldnt come back if he was 1lb 4 he would be on deaths door so weight mangement is vital.. yes i hunt with ferrets and the bird gets to know that the ferret is apart of the team.. goshawk is very fast... but harris hawks are good, fun this year we will be hunting 2males and a female together at rabbits..
