Ok so i have a difference of opinion to a fella i go ferreting with and want to know what you guys do or think is right.
I always make sure my ferret has eaten before taking him to work......in my opinion if he is not hungry then he may very well kill underground, but because he is not hungry then he is less likely to stay underground and feed, then sleep. Ok i may lose a bunny by not knowing where it is underground but thats my loss.
Now my buddy on the other hand doesnt feed his ferret before going out.......his belief is that if its hungry then he works harder to get a bunny.......and then if he kills underground then he will stay with the bunny and you know where to dig and get the bunny and the ferret.
Its true what he says in one term but i for one dont envy a dig every venture i go on.
Just wondering everyone elses methods.

any time i go hunting i always make sure they have had a bit to eat, they still hunt well with a full belly, i would never go hunting with a hungry ferret, for the simple reason as you mentioned if the ferret catches up with the rabbit and kills it and then eats the rabbit they will go asleep and you will have to start digging. if they have full bellies and catch the rabbit they will just kill the rabbit and then leave it in the borrow and come out. to be honest with you i have never yet had to dig out any of my ferrets,

, i find that with a small feed they work a hell of alot better than if fed a full feed, also a really hungry ferret works alot less..

they will eat and lay down and stay with rabbit if they are hungry. anytime my buck killed a rabbit in a burrow he always came back out after killing him, never had to dig him out touchwood.

anyhow to get back to the topic in question, i would say make sure your ferret has some food before you go working with them

Ive only had to dig twice. My ferrets always have a munch before working. Now i love my ferreting and all that goes with it.......even the odd dig is welcome on a crisp frosty morning .......but fed is best ......but my mate still has his ideas about it. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

fed is best, and to tell you the truth m8 a good ferret should never have to be dug out, they should always come to out when they are called, the longest i was ever waiting for my ferret to come out of a burrow after a kill was about about 10 mins of calling him out.
